Please share what your 2 miles were when you were around 5-flat.
Back in high school, I first ran a 5 minute mile with a low mileage base. My 2 mile time was a shade over 11 minutes.
A decade later, I was around a 5 minute miler but on 40 MPW and was running a two mile in 10:30ish.
I ran 5:01 and 11:30 in the same season.
5:03 and 11:01 in two races one week after another.
my freshman HS year track season, I broke five at the same time that I was running 10:40s. I'm slightly more distance-oriented, however, so anywhere between that and 10:50 seems probable
4:57 and 10:48 in the same week, long long ago
Interesting, when I could knock out sub-5's I couldn't dip below 12 in the 3200 for the life of me, I guess some people are more aerobically stronger than others.
I've always thought you add 20 seconds and double your mile time. So 10:40 would be a good baseline. If you are lacking on the endurance side, you'll be a little slower.
When I ran 4:50, I ran a 10:21 3200. I didn't break 10 until I was a sub 4:40 miler.
I ran a 4:52 and a 10:40 one season....then ran a 4:46 but never cracked 10:50 the next.
10:13 for the 2 mile and, 1/2 hr. later 4:42 for the mile.
1966, HS track meet; won the 2 mile and 3rd. in the mile.
What do you guys think is the mile equivalent of a 9:30 2 mile for a high schooler?

4:30-4:40

In high school when I was running only 30-40 mpw, my best 2 was 10:43 the season I broke 5 (4:58). If you're older and have more mileage under your belt, high 10:20s is about right, I'd say.
As a soph i ran 4:49 and 10:15 indoors, and I was on low mileage/I don't feel that I was very distance oriented. Maybe I just got lucky in one race, but I'd say 5 flat should be good for at least 10:40
I ran a 5:01 mile and a 9:42 2 mile in high school.
11:22
I was probably in 5:05 shape though
Combination of coming back from an off week w/lots of junk food, going too conservative (only my 2nd 3200), and having pretty crap endurance. I was on like low-mid 20s for mileage. In reality at 5 flat shape I should be able to do around 11
i ran a 5:02 mile and then ran a 11:23 2 mile, then again i ran a 11:19 2 mile split in a 5K
Using calculus, prove that you ran a sub-5:01 mile during your 9:42 2 mile.
Obviously, this depends on whether a person is speed/distance oriented. It also depends on the amount of aerobic development that a runner has. For the average 5:00 HSer, I would say that 11:00 is a very reasonable 2-mile time. However, a HSer (or anyone else, really) who has actually worked on developing their aerobic system (nothing crazy, let's say 45 mpw for 6+ months) should be able to go 10:40s.
I had a sophomore who went 4:57/10:41 this past year. He has very little speed (2:12 800 PR, 1:01 400 PR), but had been running 40-50 mpw for about 7-8 months at that time. Our crosstown rivals had 3 guys right around 5:00; 4:59/10:52, 5:00/10:59, and 4:57/11:07.
On another note, the poster claiming that a HS 9:30 only requires 4:30-4:40 is on crack. This may be accurate for some exceptions, but it certainly is not the rule. Most 9:30 HS kids can run low-mid 4:20s.
