Poor kid was a Lieutenant assigned to the 256th squadron in Pianosa. Mudd was killed in action before officially joining the squadron, and due to the bureaucratic uncertainty over his status, no one will accept responsibility for his belongings. They just sit there, untouched, in Yosarian's tent.

Unfortunately, Yossarian doesn't really care anything about Mudd.
