I took up 400m running in my mid 20s, and now aged 30, I've been at it for 5 track seasons, and my best is 54.88, though my best this season is 55.61.
I'm thinking of doing something different next year, and training for long jump alongside my 400m. I've never trained for the event, and my technique is poor, so I think with training I could improve a lot. My PB is 4.83m. 6 metres may be asking a lot given my 100m speed only being 12.5, but perhaps 5.50m is achievable.
Would training for long jump be a help or a hindrance to my 400m, and visa versa?
I train 5 days a week and would like to keep it like that. I do 2 days of strength work in the gym, 1 day of speed work (blocks, 60s, 120s etc), 1 day speed endurance (3 x 300, 5 x 200 etc), and 1 day endurance (500-400-300 for example). If I trained for long jump, would I simply replace my speed day with a jumps session?
Also with regards strength work in the gym, I don't do much actual jumping, except some bench hops. Would I need to include more jumping related strength work? At the moment I do the usual strength stuff like squats, split squats, lunges, upper body etc.
Thanks in advance.
