She'll get trashed by Genzebe regardless.

Probably. These girls are worlds beyond all other current female 5000m runners, but because they're so equal to each other, it'll behave like a tactical race between them, and my money's on the girl with sick 1500m speed: Genzebe.
Bad news for Jenny and Shannon, but good news for the fans. Even as a fan of Simpson and Rowbury, I would have been really disappointed if Genzebe didn't run the 1500m. I mean, she just set a WR in the event! It would have felt hollow without her there.
Getting back to the topic of this thread...
The question for me becomes: Will Genzebe try the time-trial strategy to ensure gold but over-cook the pace because she won't have pace-setters? If so, Shannon or Jenny could steal gold! Possible, but not likely--I think Dibaba still gets the win.
Fortunately Shannon & Jenny occupy 2 of the top 4 spots in women's 1500m running right now. Unfortunately, they'll both have to beat Hassan in order to avoid the terrible 4th position. Usually Hassan is a little raced-out by August, so I'm guessing an American nabs silver, but I think Hassan will still get bronze. One of our beloved leading ladies is probably going home crying.

I agree. You always want the best competition possible running. I would like to see an American medal but having a recent WR holder at the meet but not running the event would hurt the credibility of the 1500m.
Now Dibaba just needs to go for the triple and run the 10000m. She'd be the female Zatopek.
are they really beloved?they are both annoying dorks if you ask me.but i support our american mid-distance and distance runners more than foreign competitors, so I'll be hoping hassan and dibaba knock each other out and we get gold-silver.

Bad news is when you learn that you can't run.
Not when you find out you are running against someone good.
I'm relieved. Winning the gold without the current world record holder at the top of her game would seem hollow.

Zatopek was doped to the stratosphere?

Can someone tell me why track meets need to be 9 days long?? Wouldn't 4 or 5 days be enough? And really make doubling more interesting?

Only if Anaya quits before starting, the way that most Americans do.

Not saying she won't win, but Dibaba has bombed at worlds/Olys.
My guess is that Dibaba will try to exert as little energy as possible in the 1500 rounds so that way she isn't dead by the 5k final.
If they halved the number of competitors, then yes, they probably could have a 4-5 day meet, but there would be much less interest worldwide as entire nations could get shut out by tightening up standards, doubling would be next to impossible, world media attention would be half as much, etc. It wouldn't as big an event, literally. Don't think the IAAF wants that.
