I've lived in pretty much every financial situation and geographic location you could imagine. I've been a broke college/med student. I've been a physician with a decent income. I've lived on both coasts. I've lived in big cities and small towns. Never once did I ever even consider dropping my dog off at a shelter when I moved. Whether I was in Ithaca or NYC, it was always pretty damn easy to find housing that allowed pets. Really just clicking the "dogs allowed" box on Craigslist has usually been the greatest amount of effort required.
Yet I often hear people casually talk about how they moved to a place that doesn't allow pets, so they had to get rid of their dog. How does anyone justify dropping a member of their family off at a shelter where they'll be euthanized in a few days if they aren't adopted by strangers? Can someone explain this?
