Not awful if you use it occasional, but try to avoid it.
It's much more appropriate to say you were jewed than gypped.

Yes, gypped has a well-earned derogatory connotation given the history of the Roma.
Nope gypped is racist on its face while niggard or niggardly are words without racial connection
but
should be avoided because the ill-informed tend to believe it is a racially based slur.
