Question about workouts:
I am a runner in my later 30s who has relatively recently run these time: 2:26 marathon, 1:09 half-marathon, 15:3x 5K. Before any of the kids on this board bash me for being slow, not being elite, or sucking, I know I’m not elite. I’m just a guy who enjoys competing and am still fairly fast given my age.
Here’s the thing – I’m still running the workouts I was running 10 and 15 years ago. I may not hit the same times, and over the last few years I’ve noticed my recovery takes a couple extra days (I was blessed when I was younger – I could run a workout or race and bounce back and be totally fresh/100% the next day). So what should my workouts look like in 5 or 10 years? Or what should my friends in their 40s (or 50s) run for workouts knowing I don’t want them running what I do and killing them?
For workouts I usually alternate repeats with tempo runs each week, and typically do 800-2000m repeats or 8-10 mile tempo runs. I might do 10x800m or 5-6x1600m or 4-5x2000m (I’m usually training for long distances, not 5k’s). Should older runners (40+ and 50+) do workouts like these? Yes, but at a slower pace? Yes, with additional rest? Or no, run fewer repeats/less overall volume. I purposely did not include paces here because it’s natural to slow as we age and I am more worried about exertion on the body than pace.
I’m assuming I won’t be able to handle 10x800 or 5x1600m in five years unless I slow down and/or take extra rest. I think I’ll be doing 6-8x800 or 3-4x1600 and find that’s enough.
What got me thinking about this is a friend who is 50+ asked me for advice on workouts. I know he can’t handle my workouts so I didn’t know what to tell him. Any feedback from guys who have ‘been there, don’t that’ is appreciated.
