This blog post by Oiselle CEO Sally Bergensen was getting some attention on twitter so I gave it a read.
She talks about how Michael Jordan always had a “love of the sport” clause in his contracts and elite track athletes should have the same thing. She wants athletes to have the rights including...
"(1) Showing public support and cheering for fellow athletes regardless of sponsor affiliation, (2) attending meets, races, or other events as a supporter regardless of sponsor affiliation, (3) forging personal relationships with other athletes and industry participants in good faith and as a positive representative of the sponsor/brand."
Maybe this was an issue for MJ, but I don't see it as a problem in the track world at all. Athletes from different sponsors (even Nike) are constantly being buddy-buddy on Twitter and showing support to one another. The only group that doesn't seem to get a ton of love (or give it out) is NOP. Otherwise everyone seems to get along just fine.
Of course sponsors encourage (or force) their athletes to PARTICIPATE in their events, but I've never heard a situation where an athlete couldn't go watch some other pro meet that they're not racing in. And plenty of Nike athletes ran at the adidas Grand Prix for example.
I started off as a supporter of the Oiselle group, but am liking them less and less. They seem to always be complaining even when there's nothing to complain about. Unlike a lot of people here, I'm still a big Kara Goucher fan, but the group as a whole (or maybe just their CEO) annoys me.
