It does seem pretty obvious that this website has an aversion to promoting NOP athletes unless, of course, there is a doping accusation attached to the story...

We reached out to her for an interview and she declined. Would have been a good opportunity for QOD. Dibaba's 3:50 beat her out on Friday and I don't think that's unfair; 3:50 is ridiculous. Ben True's quote was the quote of the day for Sunday so it's not like we chose his over Rowbury.
Shannon Rowbury, a Nike Oregon Project runner, declined an interview from LetsRun. Go figure.

Also, NOP athletes get more than their fair share when it comes to Quote of the Day.

Well, she did just break a 31 year old American Record. Not something that happens everyday, obviously, if it took 31 years for it to happen.
That is sort of newsworthy don't you think?

Why go figure? Did Letsrun give Cytomel to athletes? Did Letsrun coach athletes how to get o thyroid hormone? Did Letsrun ship drugs in the mail? Does Letsrun have a medical lab in their headquarters? Did Letsrun to Androgel testing? Did Letsrun abuse TUE'? Did Letsrun ever threaten athletes? Coaches?
What has Letsrun ever done to Rowbury except promote her?
Did you reach out to Ben for a Interview? It that the requirement for QOD? I don't know you guys, but it seems a little unfair to me.....overall I love the front page of LETsRUN...but Shannon has been Americas top 1500 (at least top 2) for over 10 years now...she is not perfect, but she seems to have a strong well, work ethic, and love for the sport (as you)....but there should be a time when not giving interviews should not interfere with the QOD. I have been coming to the letsrun from the beginning and there been hundreds of articles, posts, and comments about Mary Decker record.....now you decide down play it because of a interview..SAD
Shannon deserves some attention for this record. You had to edit the front page to even mention her AR as part of the story for Dibaba's WR. It deserved its own storyline, never mind QOD. Her record has totally been downplayed. As was mentioned, she has been a top American 1500 runner for over 10 years and all of a sudden the board the supposedly provides unbiased (haha) running news finds an American 1500 m record un-newsworthy. I don't blame her for not granting lets run an interview.

I totally agree. Not only was Rowbury not given her own article for breaking the record, but the Simpson "rabbit" comment gives an incorrect impression of how the race played out. Fact is, the two ladies ran side by side behind the second pacesetter for the first 300 meters, with Rowbury in better position along the rail. Simpson decided that she wanted to be between them on the rail so assertively moved in at 300 meters, causing Rowbury to slow up slightly. Stop the video to 1:13 seconds and you will see Rowbury looking down trying to not get her feet tangled with Simpson who had just cut in.
http://www.watchathletics.com/video/diamond-league/2906/1500m-women-monaco-dl-dibaba-smashes-world-record-3-50-07/Simpson was the one on the outside so it was her choice to stay shoulder to shoulder, fall in behind Rowbury or move ahead of her. She also held off Rowbury's attempted move around her at 1000 meters. It seems like the "rabbit" comment was intentionally chosen to leave one with the impression that Rowbury simply tucked in behind Simpson and followed her to an American record. However, this is false because Simpson is the one who largely controlled their relative positioning in this race. If anything, she cost Rowbury time by cutting in at 300 meters and by lagging behind the second pacesetter over the next 500 meters after doing so.
The biased reporting on the 1500 record reminds me why I had stopped visiting this site. Back to Track & Field News.

You are right. Her record was downplayed by Dibaba!! Do you want us to give a black page to someone who lost a race by 6+ seconds?
The focus in the aftermath of the one of the most amazing races in track and field history was on basically one thing - Dibaba. And rightfully so. How cuold anything else be hyped?
It couldn't.
We gave Shannon plenty of attention in the article. We included an interview with her in it but obviously she wasn't the focus of the story or the QOD the day after.
We then thought to ourselves a day or two later, " Shannon broke a 30+ year old record, she really deserves some mega props for that. Let's do a featured Q&A with her. Shannon declines our offer and yet you complain that we don't give her enough attention?
Unbelievable.
I'll pay you $1,000 if Rowbury's AR is featured in the next edition of TFN more prominently than Dibaba's WR.
Hey Rojo,
Thanks for the response. It would be quite tempting to pay someone at TFN $900 for the story just so I could pocket $100 and get you to pay. Unfortunately, I don't know anyone at TFN to make the request so I guess I will let that dream die.
It is my opinion that Shannon used to be treated better by the reporters on this site.
Dibaba ran an amazing race and most definitely that overshadowed the efforts of Shannon Rowbury. However, since Jenny Simpson appears to be more favored, I suspect that were she the one who came out ahead, she would have featured more prominently in the news stories.
I am not saying she deserved a black page, since you didn't give one to Dibaba either. I also liked what you did with the video. (I got to watch it without knowing what had happened and I was thrilled.)
What I am saying is that her efforts deserved their own byline.
Shannon's record deserved its own attention. She has run just out of the limelight for so long that she deserved the attention and I really admired her efforts in the race and her efforts over the years. As a US based site, it should have been reported on this site with some distinct labeling.
I come to letsrun for running news. I read the message board for kicks and on occasion make a comment. I have been a lifelong running fan and I hope I can continue to enjoy this site.
I will be honest in that I have mixed feelings about the NOP but, the reporting has taken on a biased and antagonistic tone. I do not for a minute think Shannon is dirty and I would be totally floored if I were incorrect about that.
Once again, my opinion.
You and your brother have a good thing here with letsrun.com and I hope it is something I can continue to enjoy as a fan of the sport.
Rowbury can't be that mad at you. Your story is the only story about the race she linked to on her website. If it's good enough for her, it should be good enough for the rest of us.
That said, I do think it would have been nice to give Rowbury her own story. I don't think doing that would necessarily take away from Dibaba's accomplishment. As you say, that would be silly. Maybe Dibaba's not the best comparison. Maybe a better comparison is Ben True, who got his own story. I think Rowbury's achievement was at least as noteworthy as Ben True getting the standard.
The story wouldn't have to focus exclusively on Rowbury. There's a lot context that makes this an important accomplishment. This is an important distance. The previous record was set by an iconic runner. It held up for a long time. And as with Solinksy and the 10,000, most people thought someone else -- Simpson -- would break it. It would have been interesting to read a story given a little more of that context. It would have been especially interesting to get your perspective on that context.
Maybe it's too early for that kind of story. If so, maybe at some you all will have the time for a longer piece.
PS Too bad you can't use Simpson's take on the race from her Flotrack interview for the QOTD. She was very complimentary. She even said "damn." That may be the first time I've heard her swear in public.

"Damn" isn't a swear.
Rowbury will get a quote of the day when she can put on makeup properly.

Ok, I admit it. I was being just a tiny bit tongue-in-cheek.
More importantly, have you heard her say "damn" in public before? Have you heard her use real swear words?
This is probably why she declined the interview
