So summer training has been going very well up until the past 2 weeks. Due to the time constraints from advanced classes Monday through Thursday I have my track workouts scheduled Friday and Sunday. A tempo and some form of interval. The intervals generally being 2000s, 1600s, 1200s, or 800s with 2-3:00 rest. I do my best to get to the track early but since I live far from the track and I can only be driven at the earliest of 9:00, it is generally already 84-88 and very humid. It has been bearable (mid 70s to low 80s) for most of the summer.
The past 2 weeks it was hot nearly all weekend and I ended up changing the workouts. Two weeks ago I was able to get a full tempo in but had to change my 5x1000@3:20 w/3:00 rest to 3x1000@3:20 w/3:00 followed by 6x400@78 w/2:00. This past week was supposed to be a 4 mile tempo@5:45-5:50 for one of the workouts and 4x1200@4:00 w/3:00 for the other. I felt awful just a mile into the tempo and decided to change it rather than save my ego for another day and just slow the pace. So it turned into a 2000@5:50 pace w/3:00 then 4x1000 at the same pace with 1:45 rest. I was pretty upset with this but it was 89 degrees at 9:30 AM. The 4x1200 turned into 2x1200@4:00 w/3:00 followed by an 800@2:40 w/3:00 and 3x400@78 w/1:45.
What I am curious on is whether or not I should change the workout, or just change the paces for the workout.
The reason I changed the workouts is because I have been trying to let the workouts come to me instead of just pushing, because of the shared knowledge that the real training does not start until the fall. What normally would have been a workout such as the 4x1200, which would have been relaxed, I decided to change it so I wasn't straining to much.
All of my training has been in the middle of 50-55 mile weeks (1 down week so far). Does it seem as if I am on the right track to run 16:10 come Footlocker South?
