So I've searched through the forums and while there were some helpful threads, I still don't quite understand the rules. So I would really appreciate a straight forward answer for the following question:
If I am transferring from one Division 1 school to another, as a walk-on do I need to ask my current school for a release? I am not on athletic money (obviously) but I was brought in on an official visit during my senior year of high school.

Did you compete at your current school? If so, then I would go to the current school clearance people and ask. I don't think it matters if you were on scholarship or not - it's about your eligibility within the NCAA.
You absolutely need a release regardless of whether you are on scholarship or not.

But what are they "releasing" me from? It's not like I signed an NLI
You need to see your schools compliance officer and ask for a
"permission to speak" form. Even if you did not compete you still need to get a release from your original school. They can talk you through the process. Look up the NCAA rulebook online and look under transfer rules to get an idea.

It's more like an athletic version of being in academic good standing. It's usually a pretty straightforward process. just email or call your AD's office about it.
If you don't get a release, then you may need to forfeit a year of eligibility at the new school (or red-shirt).
Even though you did not sign a NLI, the other school will need a release from the first school to talk with you seeing you competed at the first school. Should be a easy process, happens every hour of the day on college campuses.
