This has to be a joke..?
Mulqueen does ZERO recruiting. None. Zero.
They'll have a ton of money now that they've been in the B1G for a few years. Probably close to, if not, fully funded. No reason they shouldn't be one of the best teams on the East Coast.

What human being with options would choose to live in New Jersey?
As far as Big 10 money is concerned, yes, Rutgers will get plenty from the assorted payouts.
But, the money goes to the either the University generally and then the athletic department, Or, at the very least, to the athletic department first who then decides what to do with it. Every sport is not guaranteed big cash just because the athletic department has big cash. Someone has to still decide if they really want to support T&F/XC. Plenty of schools don't.
There are many many schools that are worse
Southern Vermont College
Western New England College
Clark University
There you go...

You know you're stupid, right?
They have to meet a certain scholarship total to compete in the conference. It is a way to "level" the playing field. As they transition to the B1G, they need to come up with the scholarships that will cover the difference.

If you're a top-flight runner, why would you choose Rutgers? If you prefer a rural environment or if you don't want to be in the Northeast, you aren't going to consider Rutgers in the first place. If you like an urban environment in the Northeast, you could go to school in NYC or Boston. I'd rather pay full tuition at Columbia than get a full ride in New Jersey.
As a former NJ HS coach who had a number of decent state level athletes (a few who went onto be impact athletes at div I schools) not one ever received any contact from Rutgers.
This is like complaining that Iona is terrible in the sprints.
Rutgers does not care about being good in the distance events, which is fine. They focus on sprints up to the 800m and the field events. They had a decent amount of success this year with that philosophy - 2 jav throwers made NCAA, 1 400m runner made NCAA, 1 Long Jumper made NCAA. All in all not that bad. They also have a low 46 400m runner coming in next year.

You obviously get your (ahem) 'information' about New Jersey from stand-up comics.
How does it feel to be profoundly ignorant?
As a former distance runner at Rutgers, I can say the historically poor performance is a combination of a couple influences: limited funding, focus on sprints/field/decathlon and competing in a conference with institutions that have less commonality. Historically Rutgers as a public institution could show well in the Big East championships against private, smaller enrollment schools regularly by having good sprinters (not coincidentally syphoned from the football program), some good throwers/jumpers, and decent relays to score well.
However, now that Rutgers is in the Big Ten the increased level of all around high quality programs will force Mulqueen and the program to invest in all facets of events, if they want to be even remotely competitive they need to have scorers in the 800 - 10K. Take this year for example, Rutgers was putrid at the Big Ten championships. You cannot be successful if you're only willing to dedicate resources to your sprinters, javelin throwers, and jumpers. Mulqueen is a nice guy, but now Rutgers is playing with the big boys, and they'll have to quickly adjust their development strategy or Mulqueen's days will be numbered.

Ignorance must be bliss. New Brunswick campus is surrounded by plenty of parks and trails. It is more rural than urban. The fact that no distance runners are recruited is more the shame. NJ has produced many talented prospects. Also, I doubt that the team is fully funded. With D1 Football and Basketball programs alongside Title IX, most of the dollars probably go to balance the Women's programs.
I am not a fan of these new super conferences. Rutgers, Maryland, Nebraska...heck even Penn State...they are not Big TEN schools. I'm old enough to remember when the Big Ten actually had 10 schools. I'm a big college basketball fan and what happened to the Big East makes me sad. All of this just to feed the college football beast. You guys want a doping witch hunt? Try big time college football. Go after that cash cow and see how far you get.

No what he's saying is definitely correct. As a former PA resident, I have visited (and ran in) NJ many times and I can confirm it is one of the worst places on earth. It is dirty and really has no attraction to it. If you are an elite HS runner there is no reason to consider Rutgers AT ALL.

INCORRECT!
How does it feel to be simply wrong?

He ain't stupid, brolio. If you have ever been anywhere in your life, it would dawn on you what a soul-raping wretchole the state of New Jersey is.
I have been to Jersey many times. Been to great beaches. Run in beautiful parks and trails. Anyone who thinks New Jersey = Newark or New Brunswick has NO IDEA what they are talking about, period. Or, since this is letsrun.com, is problably just a useless troll.
