I recently injured my Achilles after running 35-40 miles per week.
If I planned to elliptical 1 hour a day in the AM and cycle 2 hours a day in the PM could I come back in better shape?
It seems like I could because I was only running around 50 minutes a day.
At the end of the day running is a skill, and aerobic capacity/leg strength have very small ceilings in this sport. (If they didn't, cross-county skiers and cyclists would double their earnings by winning elite running races).
Take the injured time to explore other cross-training methods so that when you can run again, you can combine your running with the types of aerobic training you like best. Yoga is also a nice way to improve flexibility while you're sidelined.
