I go to a major D1 school that is good in XC but is a bit better in track. How crazy is it that our coach has not sent out any emails on summer training? Everyone is running (I hope lol) but nobody has been given a training plan to prepare for XC. Is this common among top distance programs? I want to text/annoy our coach about it but I want to know first, is this standard practice? Even our top guy (sub 4, similar PR's under/over) has gotten nothing.

All a coach needs to do is include something along the lines of, "This is voluntary training" and they'll have no problem. I think a fair chunk of coaches would risk their jobs to have a good, healthy team come the fall.
Not even. If you don't require attendance or mandatory logging/ reporting of training it's considered voluntary.
There are few things in the world of sports that are simpler or more straightforward than summer training for XC. Run a lot. Run at a variety of paces. Run twice per day as often as you can. Do strides. What is it that you need your coach to explain to you?

OP- To answer your question; Your distance coach is not very good if he/she did not leave you with a fairly detailed version of what he would like you to do over the summer. Obviously summer training is on the athlete and cannot be enforced as mandatory, however, no great distance minded coach would let their distance squad do their own thing all summer and just cross their fingers.
I disagree with previous posters that YOU communicating with HIM would do you any good at all. He likely doesn't know what he could have you do that would benefit you, but for me, making sure my athletes come back healthy is priority number one and the best way to do that is to give clear instruction through a training log before they leave for summer.
Sorry to break it to you, but your coach is sub par.

Per NCAA rules a coach can engage in voluntary activities provided he/she is contacted individually by a student athlete requesting individual instruction.
Is it against NCAA rules to simply have a file that describes the summer training plan? I always was given plans in college.
Coaches can send out training as a guideline or suggestion but can't require it be done or require any reporting on it. An online log that is mandatory to fill out would be against NCAA rules during the summer. Sending a training plan to help guide summer training or as a suggestion of what to do is not against the rules.

Why would D1 athletes be given different rules than D2 or D3? Don't see yourself as more significant than the other divisions, you're still in a sport that doesn't make money for your school and very few people outside the program care about.

All of them. Very well in fact and much better than you do apparently.
The term "mandatory" insinuates that there is a punishment or form of repercussion if the athlete does not adhere to the given schedule.
A "summer training plan" does in no way violate this clause provided the coach does not punish the athlete for not adhering to it.
Furthermore, the coach may even supervise workouts so long as no instruction is given other than instruction to promote the safety of each athlete as it pertains to form and technique.
Welcome to the big boy league of coaching. I wouldn't expect you to know any of these things from your level.

Anyone who is claiming that NCAA Div 1 coaches are not permitted to provide optional written workouts to incoming or returning student-athletes is NOT a D1 coach. No, coaches can't personally require logs, reporting, or any version of workout verification, but guidance is DEFINITELY permitted.
