A few times when out running an insect has flown straight into my mouth and I've inhaled it into my lungs.
Anyone know what happens when something like that gets into your lungs? Any dangers?

Protein and omega-3 fatty acids. Enjoy.
Your lungs can expell (over time) anything over a certain size. Anything under a certain size can be absorbed and removed that way. It is the particles in the middle (such as asbestos) that cause big issues, since you can't remove them. Bugs are well within the size range that will be expelled. You won't notice, but eventually you'll cough/sneeze it out.
I used to run at a park that had a few spots where the trail dipped down through dry creek beds in the shade. These spots would be just packed with gnats in summer evenings in a 20 or 30 minute window. It was awful if I happened to come through these spots during that time range.
It happens to me way too often - especially being an alternating nose and mouth breather. I was thinking of creating a mesh screen mouth/nose protector for the summer months. I might startle a few people out on the trails with my Hannibel Lecter mask though.
