Last 800 meters in a championship 1500m race:
1980 Moscow 1500m final, Coe 1:48 5,
2015 Eugene 1500m final, Centro 1:48.7.

Coe started from 700m out and also had a rabbit for about 580m of that last 700m. The final time was also slower.
Can anyone tell us the comparable last 600 meter splits?
It's hard to discern from the 1980 videos of Moscow because much of that race was recorded at ground level on the backstretch.
Coe was effectively rabbited by the East German for at least a lap of that, and only ran 3:38.4, but yeah, I would equate Centro's current fitness and capability with that of Coe in his prime. It would be nice to see him go under 3:30 at some point this summer.
Coe is still one of the best 800m runners of all time. That's good company.
In addition, his 1500/mile times are still very good, even using today's standards.
Watch the 2004 Olympic 1500m final. El G and Lagat close in 1:47.x
Coe didn't really start to crank it up until the last bend. He wold have Centro for tea. Centro isn't half the runner Coe was.
EPOhhhh, I forgot about that one, lol

You think Centro is currently in 1:41/3:29 shape?
Centro is better than Coe (British doper as they all were anyway). He is in 1.40/3.25 shape, he just needs the right race. If Mo Farah could run 3.28, then Centro can run 3 seconds faster, for sure.
AlSal is the best coach on the planet (all his accusers are just haters), and he will get Centro to that level, just as Hasay will get to sub-30 minutes for 10000m in the next couple of years. NOP rules!!
Levins will also run sub-3.30 and sub-13.00 next year. That is the AlSal magic.
I think he is in 1:43/3:29/13:10 shape, of course a different profile than Coe. More like Ovett, actually.

Neat. Using 3:31.7 and 1:44.62, I get:
400 0:48.30
800 1:44.62
1000 2:14.44
1500 3:31.7
1-mile 3:48.96
3000 7:38.14
2-mile 8:15.24
5000 13:26.78
10000 28:52.31
Using your numbers 1:43/3:29, I get:
400 0:47.40
800 1:43.0
1000 2:12.49
1500 3:29.0
1-mile 3:46.10
3000 7:33.49
2-mile 8:10.33
5000 13:19.97
10000 28:41.26
He has already done 13:20 in a one-off, think he is good for 13:10 optimally, and maybe 3:28 in a perfect race (like Mo, haha).
I wonder how much Centro and Mo have trained together for speedwork?
Has any American closed a last 800 in a 1500 faster than Centrowitz? When I heard 1:48.7 that was the first thing I thought about.
Abdi Bile closed the 1987 World Champs around 1:46,0 I believe. And before that Coe's last 800 was the fastest ever. I think El G and Rui Silva finished in 1:48 in the Athens Olympic 1500. Or possible 1:47.
Watching Centrowitz against the best Americans with a lap to go reminds me of how easy El G looked compared to the world class fields. Everyone else pumping their arms hard to stay close. Centrowitz is so smooth.

True, but sometimes when you increase your speed, your endurance decreases. Fitness isn't static nor irreversible. Your 13:10 Centrowitz sounds like the Centrowitz of last year not this year.
I don't follow the sport that closely, so I hope these PRs are right for him for last year:
3:31 & 1:45 (slower 800m speed than this year)....
400 0:48.90
800 1:45.0
1000 2:14.58
1500 3:31.0
1-mile 3:48.04
3000 7:33.58
2-mile 8:10.00
5000 13:15.25
10000 28:18.43

Please comment on bile's last 800m in the '87 world champs. I believe it was fairly comparable.
abdi had to be in 3'27/3'28 shape that day to run that finish in a quickish tactical 1500
don't forget that cram ran 3'31 that year & abdi totally destroyed him

& he beat straub a 3'33pb guy who led last 700m by a coupla strides
centro is in 1'43-mid shape as that new york 800 was damn windy & costa at least 1s
he is likely 3'29/3'30-flat
coe in '80 looked no better than '79 & lost 2 800s
i'd reckon 1'42-mid/3'30
coe here wouda probably won by a stride as he wouda got all the drafting
juxtapose the positions last coupla laps & make coe actually run it as hard as centro & i'd go for centro

No he did not have to be in that sort of shape.
The bronze medallist in 2004 ran like 1.46 last 800 - quicker than elg and lagat
Rui Silva
