REK for his show.
LL in a 5km.
LL in singing.
REK for songwriter.
Edge goes to REK.
Both are tons of fun. Lyle's band is more refined. As far as songwriting REK used to be very good but his work the last few years suggest he is mailing it in. Early work like Gringo Honeymoon was tremendous. I've seen both multiple times. REK with the Greencards in a small theater in Easton,Maryland was a great show. But so was Lyle in Virginia Beach. Two great Aggies who hit it big and deserve all the props in the world.
The correct and only answer is James McMurtry. End of discussion. You're welcome.

He's the better songwriter but REK has a better voice. And he doesn't exclusively sing depressing songs.
Throw Chris Knight in the mix too.
Sure, but REK is a goofball who sings about tampons. Seriously, ditch him and pay attention to a real artist and song craftsman - aka Señor McMurtry.
I'll take a McMurtry and Knight, and raise you a Steve Earle and a Ray Wylie Hubbard.
I'll take john Hiatt against all challengers.
If you want to get real serious, I'll throw down Max Stalling and claim the win.
I might have just separated the contenders from the pretenders.
And all of those guys would bow to Townes.
and Guy Clarke
They all suckle at the teat of Mike Mcclure...
Love both these guys...a lot. McMurtry, Townes, etc. are awesome as well. So good to know that Letsrun has some cultured folks in addition to all it's BS!
Would also give a shout out to Slaid Cleaves and Son Volt.
