I will be a sophomore in high school. I have a stress fracture that has taken me out of running for about six weeks. Doctor says I have four weeks to go without running. I am currently cycling to maintain my fitness. It doesn't hurt to ride at all. I've been riding about 100-120 miles per week, five days a week. On the days I ride alone, I'm averaging about 18 mph. On the days I go out with my Dad on the weekend, we're at 22, sometimes getting up to 25-26mph. I don't know about my heart rate. I don't have a monitor. I'm also swimming two days a week for about 45 minutes. I don't have any workout plan, I just swim laps. I also go to PT twice a week.
Basically, my summer training is shot because the earliest I can start running is the last week of July. All of my teammates started training in mid June. I was prepared to train harder this summer to see where it could take me. My PR last year was 16:15 5k and I ran a 4:36 for 1600 this spring before I got injured. My average during my freshman year was about 35 mpw for XC and track.
How much will this set me back for XC this year? Will all the cycling help me? Should I be able to do better than my freshman year toward the end of the season? I don't want to come back too fast (running too much) but I also don't want to come back to slow. Any advice? Thanks.
