There was a guy in my high school who didn't like track/xc despite tremendous talent, I'm curious if the lets run community can help me understand if he was top 10% or top 1% or what.
He never ran during the off season, he played basketball in the winter and summer but literally never ran a single mile outside of HS practice otherwise. He'd show up to the first day of cross country and be mediocre, then by the first meet he'd be in the varsity squad and by the end of the season he'd be the top runner on the team and would place at state.
I don't know what his track times were, but I know he placed top 10 in state his sophomore year then second at state his junior year with a 15-something time (I don't know how hilly/difficult the course was). He didn't go out for the team his senior year.
With that innate talent, if he'd been a dedicated runner, what's that in line with (in the sense of - D1 scrub, D1 all-star, olympic hopeful, etc)?
