In the last three weeks I have started base training for my soph year of XC, and once or twice a week an easy run devolves into total hell. I am building up to about 45-50 mpw and ran 37 last week with one day off. I normally run in the morning when the temps are about 75-80 degrees with little wind and fairly high humidity. I drink roughly 5-7 16oz glasses of water per day and sleep 6-7 hours a night.
On one of these really bad runs, I usually feel fine on the first mile or two at 7:30-7:45, an easy pace. Then in the third or fourth mile I begin to feel like I'm losing my energy, my form starts to slip, and my breathing rate increases. The last 1-2 miles I actually have to stop running multiple times to regain the energy I need to keep going. What might be causing this? I never see it happening to anyone else I run with.
My diet, in case that helps:
Pre-run: cup of high-protein yogurt or oatmeal
Post-run: eggs or peanut butter sandwich
Lunch: turkey or beef sandwich, misc. vegetables, cup of fruit
Dinner: grilled chicken/pork/etc., vegetables, fruit, glass of milk, dessert 1-3 times a week
