Ted Banks was my coach at Long Beach State. He was on the track every day with his athletes. He had been at San Jose State earlier and coached Tommy Smith and Lee Evans. He was a strong believer in executing proper running mechanics and he would supervise all of the 100, 200, 400 runners each day emphasizing high knees, rapid arm movement, loose jaw for relaxation. He also emphasized proper base middle distance in the fall and was an expert at fine tuning for conference and NCAA. He always brought his athletes to "peak" at exactly the right time. I later was a graduate assistant for Ted Banks and personally witnessed his coaching abilities with the world class athletes others have described above. He was a work horse both in cross country, indoor and outdoor. Anyone who implies that Ted Banks was anything less than a "hands on" coach and technician as well as a great recruiter; well they just weren't there.
