| Freakin' amazing... any track fan would enjoy this! I like how they keep showing Bekele and Sihine looking back for Geb, like they're saying, "come with us". |

hey rLaCavar, this is a rough translation of the first couple of minutes. Sorry if it doesn't sound anything like a song. Tewodros Kassahun - Anbessa (The Lion) We sent them off with our blessings Holding our flag high Could we What a pity it would be if we couldn't win I would stand right next to you and run with you if I could Our hopes are invested in you We wish you all the best (This is Kenenisa or Sihine, possibly both) It was hard, to leave you behind It was hard, the father of my dreams It was hard, my eyes looked for you It was hard, I even turned back (And this is Haile's response) Keep going, the people crave the win Keep going, our people are anxious Keep going, don't get overtaken Keep going, don't look back for me Just couldn't do it (x2) Go in without you, Haile, just couldn't do it! Just couldn't do it (x2) Go in without you, Haile, just couldn't do it! Anbessa, ...... Anbessa, Kenenisa (The Lion) Anbessa, Tarik Sera (He Made history) Anbessa, Yemayresa (unforgettable) Anbessa, Kenenisa The song is pretty long but it's basically a discourse between Haile and the new generation of runners..it has Haile telling them how it's their time to take the mantle and do their people proud. |

Some asked about the lyrics. main chorus says in kenenisas words " I am sorry haile, its too hard to leave you behind" " Haile its not working for us" Basically it talks about the new lion (ambessa) Kenenisa and the fact that they were gutted dissapointed at finishing head of Haile "our Dad" Its a typical amharic song, which is always sad but its also, a celebration of our own. |

Haile and Derartu tulu for a fact gave there gold medal to the St Mary church on the hill looking the capital 'Entoto Mairam, church Its the most touching thing that I have ever seen. |

Translator...great work. The artist's name is Tewodros Kassahun... (Teddy Afro). He had another hit song three years ago dedicated to Haile also(the title was Haile Gebreselassie). He is extremely popular. |

So has Amharic changed some in the last 100-150 years in Ethiopia? I notice the vowels are "Europeanized" a (..), u, i, a, i(..), o - all sound very French. The i (..) should be "eu" in French, but is rarely spoken as such, it sounds a lot more like i in French or e in English. I understand it varies with w's and y's and what not...but still. Also, most of the transportation words are French in texture. awtobus, ayroplan, gari etc. Other words are very German sounding and some Russian sounding- but not really spelled as such (in other words the Amharic is being lumped with a few nationalities).??? Paula speaks German and French- now she has to learn Ethiopian? |

Hey, I don't know much about the evolution of the language over the past 100-150 years but I can tell you that it's probably influenced by Italian more than any other European language. |

Amharic is a semetic language and is grouped in the southern semetic languages. The only semetic languages that are non Ethiopian are Hebrew and Arabic. there are 3 semetc languages in Ethiopia (Amharic and Tigreigna being the big ones and Gurage is the smaller one). Shocking to most Ethiopians is the fact that Arabic words for fruits and numbers are identical, eventhough we cannot understand any of it if we hear it. Its amazing as to how closely a language is to yours and yet you have no clue. Like German and English i guess. unless you pick every word and examine the roots you have no idea what ppl are saying.. Amharic has not changed in the last 100 - 150 years.. sure there are a lot of english words that are realted to science and some Italian words related to automobiles.. but for the most part its a fairly unique language with its own alphabet (shared with other Ethiopian languages) and Seven Volwels.. |
