Training Ideas
WINTER
Paavo Nurmi long winter walks for the mind-art-spirit-vision
Outdoor Cross Country running, clean snow, steady ground, blue sky, afternoon:
assorted, mix circuits, variegated terrain: 4k, 6k stretches and combinations. Each go, 25 to 30m. Rest and repeat. Perhaps two-a-day, but usually 4 per week and sometimes mix in with day of other easier running on flat surfaces (asphalt bike paths, park grass / weight lifting). Don't run fast for safety reasons. Save the ego for the other seasons.
Forest runs with snowshoes/ground gripping shoes
6:30 pace sustained for safety reasons, equivalent of faster
Cold but dependable dry non icy days:
7:20 pace sustained for cold air reasons, equivalent of faster
I usually mix that cold slow day in, 1:1 or 2:3, with indoor track work.
6:40 pace on the Treadmill, people will be staring at you,
perceiving you envisioning races and change of paces.
Gym regimen: keep your mind sharp for racing
Swimming: if you do this, you've really got your affairs together. highly advanced.
3 by mile on indoor 200m track during lunch/afternoon break.
6:20-5:35 pace. 5 to 2 minute rest.
I liked doing this cause it gives me some pride during the day.
The slower end with more recovery, that upper end of the range, is the easier side and using this to keep one's mind and emotions sharp for that "recruitment" I mentioned before. When you are ready and serious to envision racing, then go faster with less rest. Plus, the intervals allow me time to go get a drink, change a shirt, etc.
STRENGTH
Big Hill repeat/s: dry Fall, dry Spring, dry Summer
on grass or a safe road with good material and views
fast pace, 35-40s, over 200-500 m which feels longer because of incline.
1-4 repeats. Lower end, to keep the mind sharp. Upper end, cause you love Cross Country.
OUTDOORS IN GOOD WEATHER
The Jim Ryun All-Star Challenge~~~
40x400
86 second pace... I can't wrap my head around it. Maybe if I do it 40 times in a row... I'll get the feel! Slaps own face. Note: Gabe Jennings does not like this workout. Keep your mile speed and do half-marathons or 10 and 20 mile runs for spiritual reasons, I think will keep you 5k sharp without destroying your brain and enjoyment with boring track work.
The Emil Zatopek~~~
400m-800m woods circuit
86 second 400m repeats with 600m recovery jogs
Hey, this is not so bad! What a lovely place for running this is. See, I told you nice views and landscape help.
Indoor workout taken to outdoors~~~
You know what you can do the 3 by mile workout, too. Outdoors, on the track.
5 by mile,
5:40-6:00, gets boring on a track but is great on a grass forest circuit.
Getting 6:10-6:30 recruitment usually is most conveniently and enjoyably done with a very good training location... If you have money, get some acres, typically former farms, and get some nature and roads to run out on. Consider Parks and a State's nature stewardship as part of the quality of living index in your financial and retirement planning.
WEATHER TIPS
