He went missing last December break and was suspected to have gone to New York. The UPenn track team is now down two in one year. The cause / motive of death is as far as I know unknown so far, but either way what a sad fate.

Wow. So a lot of new info from this article: http://www.thedp.com/article/2015/06/timothy-hamlett-found-deadParents have confirmed the death was a suicide, and most interesting to me was this quote:
The DP wrote:
During his sophomore year at Penn, friends said that Hamlett's personality changed. His parents believe that this change in character was caused by his use of performance-enhancing drugs. In September 2014, Hamlett was arrested for throwing a brick through someone’s window. Following the incident, Hamlett took a medical leave of absence from the University.
“We as a family strongly believe that his use of supplements was an aggravating, if not primary force for the change in his behavior,” Hamlett said.
Apparently the death had a lot to do with taking PEDs? What a terrible way to go, and this says a lot about the harmful side-effects of many of these drugs.
Is this the first suicide linked to performance-enhancing drugs in track and field?
I remember reading about his disappearance last January. I hoped he didn't commit suicide but the reporting made it seem highly plausible he did.
My condolences to his family and the team.
In the article you linked to, I was surprised at the 9-5 hrs for the psych help provided by Penn. Seriously, only during classroom hours? Not many kids are available during that time! I really hope that Penn extends their hours and or changes their on campus procedure for helping these kids. Two track athletes in less than 2 years... Two too many!
What kinds of PEDs are suspected I wonder.

Reread the article. The writer said "performance-enhancing drugs, not the parents. If there was evidenc of PEDs they would have said which ones. The parents only said "use of supplements"
His parents don't have a clue. They're looking for answers and they found an easy out.
He could have been abusing amphetamine/adderall. Happens often at high pressure schools, unfortunately.
"The family believes supplements like Pygeum, Ginseng Panax, Vitalikor Male Enhancement, Big Jim and the Twins Penis Enlargement were responsible for the 20-year-old developing psychosis shortly before his disappearance."

OK, but those are quite a different kind of PED that are used in athletics.

LaShawn Merritt got banned for Extenze...lots of "male enhancement" supplements contain DHEA, a testosterone precursor.
I do agree that parents are looking for an easy out here. If these supplements caused psychosis or suicidal thoughts, we'd know about it already, given how many people take them.

Antonia Pettigrew killed himself a few years ago and it was thought to be from depression about is admitted PED use.

Whoa....how did that somehow slip by me?! I honestly don't remember hearing that Pettigrew committed suicide.

August 2010
http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/trackandfield/news/story?id=5682180This couldn't have resulted from PED use, because PEDs have been specially designed to help average joggers become the fastest runners in the world and leap tall buildings with a single bound.
New update from his mom:

https://www.facebook.com/MissingTimothyHamlett/posts/767636683350035My best guess after all this is that he took male enhancement pills, but they weren't to overcompensate sexually -- instead he was using them for the DHEA found inside which boosts testosterone and is technically a PED for sprinting.
