So I'm a sophomore in college, running for a small DIII school in the southeast. Since high school, I've been running both the 400m and 800m races, because I've always been decent at both. This season, I ran 1:55 for the 8, and 49.7 for the 400. There isn't really anything wrong with the way things have been going: I've experienced moderate improvement since I started track in high school. But at the same time, I'm wondering if I'm leaving something out there by trying to train effectively for both races? I feel like if I were a real 400m runner, I'd be doing more lifting and more speed work. I feel like if I were a real 800m runner, I would be doing more mileage, longer track workouts. My season (which just ended) peaks at about 30 miles a week, lifting at least twice a week. Am I crazy, or should I pick a race and try to focus on one?
