- affordable (between $400 and $800)
Don't care much about graphics, looks, battery, size.
Also, all I know is Windows 7. Is Windows 8 crap? Can you downgrade to Win7?

A friend of mine repairs computers for a living.
Don't get anything but a Toshiba or an HP. His advice can be fluid based on how hard certain brands and models are to repair. I.e., he used to love Lenova, now he hates them.
I always relied on him for purchasing advice with my startups.
You should take her to test the keyboards, unless she is going to get an external keyboard.
I have a macbook air, and a Sony Vaio with bluray as my media slave.
