So my kid is in middle school and does cross country. He's middle of pack, has a lot of fun with it, and wants to do it next year. Last year's coach has dropped out for personal reasons and the athletic director doesn't seem too interested in finding a new coach. Usually by this time they have had a meeting about cross country for next year and the optional summer training program. This year, nothing, and there are rumors going around that there won't be a program in the fall this year.
Should I volunteer to coach?
I'm just a dad who runs, adult onset runner, and very slow by letsrun standards (22 minute 5k, been running a couple years, mid forties). I know a lot of conventional wisdom about running but don't have any deep lifelong knowledge and have no idea how to teach anyone else, let alone a group of kids with different ages (6th through 8th grades) and skill sets. However, I'm smart, passionate about running and helping kids, and would commit to it and spend a lot of time learning over the summer.
Would I help these kids by just having a program or would I do more harm than good? Just how hard is it?
