Usually they'll do a basic iron profile which includes hemoglobin, total iron binding capacity, and some other things. It does not include serum ferrittin, which is what you should get in addition to the others. Usually they won't do serum ferritin unless the first tests come back low. You'll need to convince them you are a runner and ferrittin (the storage form of iron) can drop before hemoglobin in runners and you need it done as well. Ferrittin can actually drop to 0 while hemoglobin stays in normal range, at least for awhile. I'd also get Vit D done while you are at it, it's cheap and easy.
Most labs use above 25 for ferrittin as normal but for runners above 30 would be better, above 50 even better. Seems like mild symptoms are reported below 50 and more severe symptoms below 30. Everyone is different though so some people are fine with it really low, but most aren't. If he says it is normal after the test make sure to get a copy of the blood results so you can make sure it isn't just barely above normal.
Some people will tell you low ferrittin isn't that big a deal if hemoglobin is normal, but as red blood cells die off they'll need to be replaced, and without enough iron to build new ones it gets to be a problem. Red blood cell turnover is pretty high in runners, and you want to make sure you're body can replace them properly.
