When they run 13 minutes for 5000m or 27 minutes for 10 000m, how come it looks like they are jogging or maybe running at 5 minute mile pace? Is it because of their biomechanics?

Ppl tell me that all the time so I must be an elite runner.
They're not. It's a trick. Try timing them with your own stopwatch and you'll see. The clock on the field runs slow.
A lot of times they ring the bell before 24 laps in the 10000 too, nobody notices after that many laps.
Probably because they are all moving at the same speed and exerting a 5k or 10k "effort". If they looked like they were straining they might look faster. Just a guess
Have you seen a 6 minute mile pace on video? Especially from a front view, it looks like you out for a warmup jog.
For starters, distance runners aren't fast. It's just not the nature of our sport. Rupp's 10k AR averages 13.8 miles per hour. It's an impressive feat, but not an awesome sight.
Also, elite athletes in many sports "make it look easy." For us, easy = slow.
It 100% has to do with efficiency. They are as efficient at that pace as most people are at jogging that's all there is to it.
The crazy thing is to compare a 2:40 marathoner to a 2:20 and see how drastically things change. Both are very fast marathons but if you compare the form of the 2:40 boston wave to the 2:20's or faster it looks like the 2:40 (6min pace) has shit form and are straight up dragging ass if u slow the video down.
I read somewhere (I think it was Daniel's Running Formula) that even world class runners have the same leg turnover as the rest of us. The difference is their stride length.
what are some good resources to get from "crap" 2:40 form to good 2:20 form?
I've started to believe your stride is your stride and it's really difficult to overcome that
Because people are slow compared to so many other things . We are slower than animals of many types and sizes. A 4 minute miler only finishes a lap and 1/3 ahead of a six minute miler. It's not like the Incredibles are a real family.
The fastest man in the world only runs 100M , one thousand one, one thousand two , faster than than an average high school athlete except for the baseball players.
People are slow.

Don't know if you are talking about what it looks like on tv vs. live.
But a 98 mph fastball doesn't look all that amazing on tv, either, but get in the batters box and
the average civilian will wet themselves.

"Only" a lap and a third?
Yes it’s their biomechanics and efficiency.
And just plain being fit.
Watch a marathon race and see how it looks so easy. Then watch for a random person trying to run along side them and see how hard they are going for just 50 m or so.
This is why it’s not a good spectator sport. Even if you really understand the sport without a clock it’s almost pointless
The best can run with very fast leg turnover with zero upper body use, and just cruise along until their final lap sprint. If you look at the upper body they appear to be jogging. But look at their legs. Jakob I is a great example.

Good analogy.

Correct. If you're very fit you can cruise along and make it look easy. I had teammates run 2/3 laps with me in races then drop like flies. I'd ask them afterwards why they did that. They'd say I made it look so easy. If you have a good aerobic engine it looks like you're not running so fast.
Is there a rule against attaching a helium balloon to yourself while running a road race?
Am I living in the twilight zone? The Boston Marathon weather was terrible!
How rare is it to run a sub 5 minute mile AND bench press 225?
Move over Mark Coogan, Rojo and John Kellogg share their 3 favorite mile workouts
Mark Coogan says that if you could only do 3 workouts as a 1500m runner you should do these
Red Bull (who sponsors Mondo) calls Mondo the pole vaulting Usain Bolt. Is that a fair comparison?
