What do you guys and gals think, is it polite/appropriate to send a thank you email as a follow up to an interview? Really interested in hearing from people who are managers or owners who do a fair bit of interviewing and hiring.
Gracias!

yes.......
Yes, send it. Keep it short and polite. Sound confident and not desperate.
Sure and add a memorable anecdote or 2 from the interview so that it does not come across as a complete chain e-mail. It shows your continued interest in the position and lets them think about you again.
While it won't be the only factor, little extra touches like this can help your cause and distinguish you from others if things are close.
Might as well wrote:

All of the advice given in all of the posts above is correct.
Good luck.
Yes. You really should.
I've interviewed candidates and take a lot of stock in their follow up.
If you are interviewed by the actual owner of the company then yes it may be polite. If it's an HR monkey than definitely not. They won't even read it.

I believe that this is the correct answer. I'm told that email is good for 99% of situations, but sometimes if the hiring manager is very old (or old-fashioned), a handwritten thank you is indicated.
I tend to only send a thank you email after a face-to-face interview and not after phone screenings. Is that correct, or should i be emailing after those as well?
Send it the next day -- brief and unusual, not formulaic and cliche - ridden. Don't extol your virtues. Show that you paid attention.
Notes to everyone you met.
I have never been a part of an interview(on the hiring side) or known anyone among my friends whose company has hired someone because of a thank you letter (or lack there of).
About the only thing I could see it helping is if you didn't get the job you applied for, perhaps they might have a slightly better regard for you for the next job (remember you).
This is in the field of software (developer/QA etc)
It might be useful in more menial jobs where there is only a single contact that makes the decisions to hire.
Couldn't hurt
No , the HR department will "tag" your email. You will be automatically rejected even if you had a good interview. Don't give HR a reason to open your file for a second time.

No do not !
It would seem A kissing.
Let your interview stand on its own merit.
Absolutely!
It gives you a chance to reiterate some of your strong points. Mention something that you learned in the interview. "I liked the atmosphere because..."
"I enjoyed learning about the company such as ..."
You can also mention things that maybe did not come up during the interview or that you forgot to mention.
If you enjoy kissing ass then go for it.
I wouldn't want to work for a company that hired on the basis of thank-you emails.

No one gets hired "because of" any single factor.
No one I know got hired because they wore pants to their interview. Does that mean I don't need to wear pants when I go to job interviews?
I usually send a classy hooker to their favorite lunch spit.
Fantastic results.
I made a thread about this last year: http://www.letsrun.com/forum/flat_read.php?thread=5585982&page=0. Lots of good answers in there
I can only speak from my experience, so it may not directly apply to your situation. I'm a research scientist at a large government agency, and I interview students for internships in our labs. I appreciate a brief follow-up email from the student as it indicates interest and responsiveness. Sometimes trying to communicate with students via email is like pulling teeth, so I appreciate anything that suggests ease of communication. And here's some totally unsolicited information regarding my evolving interview and hiring tendencies. I used to think that prior student success (high grades, work on high profile projects) would be an indicator of future achievement. However, those students are often the hardest to work with because they can be arrogant, argumentative, and only think they're worthy of the big sexy projects. After a few years of dealing with those entitled students, I started hiring ones who didn't necessarily have the strongest CV, but who, quite frankly, were nice and easy to work with. I came to realize that I don't really care what the student has done regarding past research experiences, because 99% of the time those skills are not relevant to the specialized work that we do in our lab. I just need a nice kid who's reasonably smart, listens well, is careful, and who I can train. I'm guessing that this generally applies to the private sector as well.

Yes, there were some good responses there. And quite honestly, just like in this thread it seems like the more professional and/or intelligent responses advocate sending the email. Just good to get the feedback from those on the hiring/interviewing side.
