The kid goes through periods where all he wants to do is play chess, then drops it for months on end. He's never had any formal instruction in chess playing, but he annihilates everyone including experienced adults.
What's his future 5K time?

What's his future 5K time?
49:00 maybe
How old is he?
As demonstrated by George C. on Seinfeld, sometime during middle school his ability will subverted and his 5k time will rise as well.
My child is an idiot.
what's your 5k PR?
My 8-year-old daughter ran 15:29 for 5k - is that good?

Could Jim Ryun have run a 1:39 800?
What's his (chess) rating???
Does he know openings?
If not, he's not beating good adults.

Not really. Just barely past hobby jogger status.
I'd suggest she try to find something that she is good at.
My child is still in the womb and is faster

We're not expert players by any means, but know enough including the classic opening moves with either the king's (control center) or queen's pawns. I'd like to see how he fares playing someone more experienced than ourselves.

Gerry Lindgren ran 16 flat for four miles. Your kid ain't got smack on that! But he she or it has a bright future in Starcraft.
Just play a "rated game" against some computer opponents of various skill levels/ratings. You can get a pretty good idea of the child's rating. This means playing whole games with time controls, no help, no "takebacks", no hints. However, this could take the fun out of it for the kid.

Get a rating. "exceptional" at this age would be around 1900-2000 ELO. You may think he's exceptional because he's beaten a couple of people who were terrible at chess. It's like saying someone is a very fast runner but not having times to back it up. But glad he enjoys it - it's an awesome game.

Don't sell yourself short. How many other non-grandmasters have figured out the pawn opening? I think moving the king's pawn is what set Bobby Fischer apart from his peers.
You got this thing, YOU DA MAN WIT DA BOY!!!!!
