If everyone was more like Americans, think of how much better the world would be.

Mandarin & Spanish both outrank English based upon the total number of speakers. Also , America sucks. Canada great.
That's all.

Perhaps you should learn to speak it first?
Wrong. English is the most used language in the world. However, more people use it as their second language than their first. It's the language of science, medicine, business, and education. Most of the content on the Internet is in English.
Sheesh--we're trying!
In terms of total speakers (not just native speakers), English is no worse than #2, and giving Mandarin a run for its money. And English is already the official "world's language" for things like air traffic control, and the unofficial language for much of international commerce.
As far as "if everyone [were] more like Americans," somehow that phrase reminded me immediately of this:

Ever heard pilots talk to air traffic control? That ain't English if I've ever heard it.
English is the THIRD most spoken language, only if you include all the people who poorly speak it as a seventh language.
While a lot of sh!t content on the Internet is English, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales said the best Wikipedia is the German one. It has much higher quality standards. There would be more Chinese content too, but they ban all the good websites.
We already said Latin would become the world language, and then French, and all it did was make the native speakers lazy and lose their world power status. We're not doing any better.
Another great post by HardLoper
They should definitely try it in America.
It already is.
Mandarin is only spoken in China. It's not a world language. English and Spanish are the two biggest, but English has way more second language speakers. English is also more influential for reasons others have already pointed out.
English is the most b a s t a r dized language with elements from many continents due to the 1,000 conquests on the British Islands.

Great, just what we need.... 7 billion more fat people who eat too much, pollute the environment, kill each other at fantastically high rates and don't understand basic science.
Spanish is now the American language.
Better idea: lets make the world language Navajo.
Loin cloths for all!

We can't even get the rotten gob brits to speak English
We must join with the Russians in a great Empire of the North. We will stand strong against the threat from the southern hemisphere. Australia and Argentina will stand no chance against our combined forces.
And our two official languages will be English and Russian and Spanish.
Don't you mean "if everyone was more like the English"? It is their language after all. You just copied the English, so in reality you're being more like the English and I assume you want everyone else in the world to be like them as well??
Speaking of the English, although they generally use their own language properly and historically have had some above average writers, they also improperly use "are" for "is" and vice versa. For example: Canada are a good hockey team. 'Sup with that?

Yes, this was proven wrong in a recent thread
After living a couple years in South America, I tell you Spanish will never be a world language. This is know with 100% certainty
