So I'm doing the 70mile max 18 week marathon schedule and am handling the mileage ok, but the vo2 max workouts totally kick my ass. The first one was 6*600 @ 5k pace with 90secs jog rest embedded in a 9 mile run. Was way too hard for me but the schedule called for 5*600 the next week and was able to do it with 2mins rest. So I thought my body was adapting and starting to manage these workouts. Then I see the next workout is 6*1000 @ 5k pace also with 90 sec rest. Then after that next workout 6*1200 @ 5k with 2mins rest. If I can't really do the 600s then 1000s and 1200s at same pace seem way out of my league. Now I know that questions prob occur re my 5k pace but my explanation for 5k pace seeming so hard is being in the middle of large mileage weeks and having done no speed work.
So my question is, are these workouts hard for other people? It's pretty demoralising....how have u guys handled these type of sessions when training for a marathon? I'm interested in other peoples experiences on these type of schedules. For the record I'm targeting 2:58 mara (4min/k pace) with a 5k of 17:00 and a 10k of 35:28.
