I know your dilemma , I was sponsored and tried to get more press locally so my sponsor would take notice.
I actually had to one day call the local press, and they obliged and said they have no idea about running etc. and without me telling them they would never know.
I lived in PA at the time and won the Cleveland 10k, which was big in those years. No one knew.
I actually took a bus.

This is a good idea. I could certainly ask a friend to do it. That way, my friend comes off as caring, while I don't look like a dolt.
