I know that in the sprints it makes sense to get out the first 7-8 sec as hard as you can because the energy is produced alactically no matter how fast one runs during those initial seconds.
My question is, does anyone know whether or not this is a good strategy for the longer distances as well? I'm assuming that heartrate skyrockets, is there any downside phsiologically to doing this.
I am not talking about where this positions someone in the pack as obviously going out to an early lead isn't always desirable, I just am curious about the physiology of it.
