I'm considering relocating to Manhattan and I've started researching apartments.
(1) It looks like I can find a "decent" 1BR on the UWS for $2700 - $3000. Does that sound accurate? Or should I have a lower price range in mind?
(2) I've been been using some "affordability calculators" for insight on the recommended budget for rent based on my annual gross income. I currently earn $85k/year ($95k with year end bonus). According to those calculators, I should spend no more than $2000 on rent, leaving me $2900/month (after taxes) left to spend.
$2900 seems like a lot. I don't have any debts and I have a fairly inexpensive lifestyle. However, I suppose that if I spend $3k on rent and have $2k/month, it won't leave me much in savings. But I am contributing to a 401(k) and I only plan on living in NYC for a few years.
I'm interested in hearing your thoughts.
