So, got a bit of a loaded question for you 'experts' out there.
I started running as a 17 year-old off of probably 15-20 MPW. I suffer from Crohn's disease and was basically just beginning my first period of remission since my early teen years and was just growing out of my asthma. I ran a 1:45 in my first unofficial Half Marathon which was part of the Island School program.
Fast forward 4 years of not really serious disciplined running (I am lucky if I hit 15 MPW nowadays), and I have run 7 more Half Marathons, PR'ing at every single one:
Mar 2013- NYC Half in 1:38:48 (didn't really run at all between 2011 and 2013)
May 2013- Brooklyn Half in 1:37:50
Jan 2014- Manhattan Half in 1:35:35
May 2014- Brooklyn Half in 1:34:36
This is where things start to get crazy:
Jan 2015- Manhattan Half in 1:30:06
Mar 2015- NYC Half in 1:28:41
And today I ran the Brooklyn Half, setting another PR in 1:27:11.
I have had a lot of people tell me that for someone who never ran seriously as a teen, I have a lot of natural ability. As someone who has never consistently run more than 20 MPW for more than one month in a row, I'd reckon I've done pretty well so far--but I am curious just how much further I could go if I were to crank up my mileage. I race very well and fighting against Crohn's has given me a lot of fighting spirit when it matters.
Let's say that I was able to run 50 MPW for the next year. Is 1:20 in the realm of possibility eventually? 1:15? Or am I just dreaming?
I am 21 years old, 5'6, and fluctuate between 120-130lbs.
Thanks for your insight.
