I just ran a marathon this past weekend and had a PR, however, i could have pushed it more if i didn't cramp starting at mile 20. I started cramping on my right hamstring, then went to my knee area, quads, and then both legs. I just kept trucking cause if i stopped, i would have fully seized up.
I did the typical 1.5 week carb loading prior to the race and had 5 GUs throughout the course at miles 5, 10, 15, 18, 22. I also had Gatorade 1st then water at every 2 miles and 3 salt tablets at mile 6, 12, 18. Did i take enough salt tablets? Did i water down the Gatorade? The temperature started at 40s in the morning and got up to upper 70s when i finished, humidity was around 80%. I sweat moderately and I am 5'9, 163lbs.
I didnt start training till 8 weeks prior to the race. I averaged 30-40 miles a week and did 3 long runs at 16, 18, 20. My long run times were around 8:45-9:20/mile while my marathon pace was 8:10.
Is it the lack of training or my nutrition that caused the cramping or both?
Thanks!
