He already has the genetics, the training is just gravy.

Environment isn't just about current conditions. Hormones that a person was exposed to (or not exposed to) in the womb is an environmental factor. Early childhood nutrition is an environmental factor.

It's really hard to separate genetics from environment because both have an impact on many observed traits. Even something like height is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors.

So no, the situation you mention doesn't really answer any questions about nature vs. nurture.

Mohamed Aman is the best 800 runner in the world. He may not have the fastest performances, but he is a 1:43 machine. Several times a year he cranks out a 1:43 or a 1:42 when it counts. He is more consistent than anyone except 2012/early 13 Rudisha, who will not be back, sad to say.

Watch his races carefully and you'll notice he attacks energetically from the gun. He never really relaxes, he's just go, go, go. He stays right on the edge the whole way through. A few people can beat him when they have a good day, but most the time they falter.

I don't think genetics can make someone like that. It's mostly upbringing, probably something he went through as a kid that makes him go berserk for 100 seconds.

Eugene is essentially at sea level. Aman was previously training mostly at high altitude in his homeland, which is much better. The coaching in his homeland is equal if not better. Perhaps the diet in the US is better, but he can afford to eat whatever is available in East Africa. And if he is susceptible to pollen allergies, then Eugene will be problematic.

Genetics, training, environment and the athlete's mentality/attitude all come into play. Everything comes into play, right down to the mitochondria.

The diet in the US is better?

It's 98% how bad you want it, 1% genetics and 1% environment.

In HS I was probably not as talented as my teammates, but wound up running faster. I used to go home and work out more after practice, run on the weekends. I did all the small things like, eat right, take vitamins, stretch etc. Keynans work so much harder that other people. They have tougher lives, so of course they are stronger and cant withstand the pain of training and racing. Same with Ethiopian people etc. Americans have become fat and lazy, they just don't know how to push it anymore.

I ran 9:54 3200m in HS, none of my teammates broke 10:00min. I was district champ, ran my last 400 in 66. I know its not that fast, but if I continued after HS I would have been able to run with the best based on my training philosphy

Genetics are literally the biggest factor. If that wasn't the case, why did you only run 9:54 and not run 8:34?

You all have such mental limitations. If you think that you can't run a certain time because of your genetics, you''ll always be short changing your self. I never thought I could have broken 10:00min, but I did, because I believed in myself, didn't put limits on my ability and trained hard and smart. Who knows how fast I could have run

Doubtful. No Ethiopian broke 1:45 before Aman, and he's run 1:42. He is a major outlier for Ethiopians and the fact that he's been training in the USA for a few years probably has something to do with that.
