I found this in my daughters room from a soccer tournament last weekend. Her age group (U8) was non-scored, so players on every team got the same award: a participation medal. This didn't sit well with my daughter, whose team won all 4 matches. So, on her own, she crossed out "participant", wrote in "champion."
As athletes, my husband and I try to instill good sports ethics in our children: try your best, but winning isn't everything and it is better to lose than cheat (sad course-cutting has forced even small charity marathons to place timing mats along the course.)
So what do you think? Is taking away the competition, taking away the fun? Or, doesn't make sports more inclusive for our children? I'm interested in hearing the viewpoints of other parents.
(Oh, and: Go Nova!)
Of course we KNOW she was thinking Rossi Mat! Too classy to come out and say it. Won't kick a loser (Philly's Biggest!) when he's down.
