Even split it as close as possible since you don't appear to have the fast twitch muscles. Try like 4:55-4:58 and try to hit around 5:00...or vice versa.
Just race someone fast. Don't think about splits so much - the big breakthroughs are when you get the rush of racing someone
If you know someones going under 10 for sure just go as long and as smart as you can. Just draft. Then go.
Do you have a coach? If not, I am a former coach on the look out to help athletes improve.
I recently went sub 5 for the first time, I went out and lead the race until 900m, then I got passed by 3 runners, stuck with them, gutted out a 70 second last lap and hung right with them for 4:59.6. So, I think you should just run a race with a sub 10 guy that you know can beat you, but you know you can hang with. Don't let them lead the whole time or they're gonna drop you, make sure you throw in a couple lead changes so you can keep your mind right, thinking that you for sure have a chance at beating them, and what ever happens just go with 200m to go.
James here is a crazy idea. You have improved 40 seconds in the mile and a minute in the 2 mile. You went from a kid that was terrible and showed no promise to one year later showing that with two more years of development you could be a very good runner. Kudos to you for putting in the work to make that happen. But you didn't get the ideas for workouts or likely even motivation from the sky. You have one of the best coaches in the state of California who also happened to run 9:03 in high school. Perhaps sitting down with him to create a race plan would be much more effective since he knows you then coming on here and talking to a bunch of random people. Trust your coach and the process and you will get there. Beat of luck to you.
