I read a lot of testimonials, depressing ones, about life at the service academies. Are the 4 years of misery worth the reward?

If you have other means to get a scholarship at a university (aka running) - just focus on your studies and running at your school of choice (maybe that is a service academy), and if the school isn't a service academy and you would like to serve, attend OCS/OTS after you graduate.
Life is tough at a service academy but definitely worth it. Great leadership schools - especially West Point. Not easy but worth it for sure. My thought though is that if you are asking on Letsrun then you are probably not the right person for a service academy.
Its not for me personally. I'm 27...I'm just wondering in general if its a good option for someone. In the end, you're going to get paid the same amount if you took the rOTC route as well, or attend OCS after going through a traditional college path.
I suppose being an alumnus of a service academy helps get you into more popular cliques, which helps you advance through the ranks faster...

Unlike most of America's Universities you will have a career with decent pay and benefits after you graduate from a Service Academy.
Otherwise you can be like the millions of college graduates that move back home with their parents & make coffee as a barista for some weekend beer money.
Think about the millions of college graduates who repeat "would you like fries with that" every day in The USA. The irony is those knuckle heads voted for it! Lol!!

Yeah, but if you find out that you don't like it, you're stuck for the next 5 years. And if you go to West Point or take the Marine path at USNA, you may find yourself deployed to yet another Middle East war. Unlike ensigns, second lieutenants will find themselves on the ground getting shot at.

It is obvious you know nothing about military life or deployments. Repeat after me..."would you like fries with that." It is what awaits you in life..probably what you deserve too.
Civilians who think they know anything about the military crack me up. Clueless is what you are kid...utterly clueless.
Because no one in the military ever gets shot at and no one who has a college degree ever gets any sort of job other than in fast food. Good thing you're not clueless or anything.

You have a greater probability of getting shot in libtard cities like Chicago, Detroit, or Camden than anywhere in the U.S. Military genius.
Most Iraq and Afganistan Vets have never, repeat never heard a shot fired in anger. Only idiots like you who buy into media hype believe the $hit you see on TV as if firefights are a common occurrence anywhere in the DOD.
You stay stupid. I'm sure you might make assistant manger at Burger King someday. Maybe before you turn 50? Then you can move out of your parents basement and get your own place(?).
WTF? This is embarrassing. If the two of you aren't going to post anything related to the OP's question then GTFO of here. Good lord LetsRun turns into a bickering bitchfest no matter the topic.

The OP is a libtard making a sad attempt to ostracize service members out of her jealous rage for those who serve and make a decent living wage; mean while she makes minimum wage despite her degree in art history or some other useless college degree.
True Story.
So these are the choices in life as you see them, a minimum wage or slightly better sort of job or a career in the military? It's hard to take you seriously but if you're actually a service academy graduate and were able to become one with this sort of critical thinking I'd say the answer to the OP's question is that it's absolutely not worth attending a service academy.

You are an idiot who can't read.
1.) The OP is only trying to belittle service academies because she is a libtard...get it moron?
2.) Of course their are other options but no other option will guarantee a.) no student loan dept after grad b.) decent pay and benefits immediately after you grad.
3.) Millions yes that is Millions with an "M" college grads go NO Where and do nothing but move back in with mommy and daddy after they grad....service academy grads do not fall into this category.
4.) Never did I say I graduated from a service academy. I am active duty military via another route.
Stay stupid libtard. You are easy to control like that.
So, two questionsIf you aren't getting shot at, what are you defending me from?Is the world a better place, based on the efforts of the US Military and Political classes over the past 14 years.Based on the fact that I still remove my shoes at the airport, and go through the security Kabuki theater to go to an MLB game, I would suggest the answers are nothing, and no.In my mind, the definition of a conservative is one who questions the role and competence of government in any endeavor. And I think without question, the government's response to September 11 has destabilized the world and made our homeland a less pleasant and secure place to live.

The poor libtard has to take his shoes off at the AP. You have it so tough....You are lil bitch who has no say in the affairs of the World. You let the adults handle $hit Junior. When I want a latte I will speak to you. Until then STFU and get back to the register and take those orders you tard.

Damn KIR, you've got some issues. No need to get so worked up, it's just the internet. A few factual notes though...There are not literally "millions of college graduates who repeat "would you like fries with that" every day in The USA" living with their parents. There just aren't that many fast food jobs and the data on who lives with their parents is complicated but:
http://www.pewsocialtrends.org/files/2013/02/Financial_Milestones_of_Young_Adults_FINAL_2-19.pdf
summarized here - it's about 12% of young adults with bachelor's degrees that live "with family" (table on p. 35 o the Pew report). Recent research strongly suggests that at either side of an SAT cutoff, people who go to college earn a lot more than those who don't on average
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/26/upshot/college-for-the-masses.html
- and the beauty of the regression discontinuity design is that you get a pretty clean justification for the assumption that the two groups should have basically equivalent potential outcomes in expectation.
Army is a great career for some but if you're the kind of person who is a serious candidate for a service academy -- strong grades, self-disciplined, leadership potential etc. -- odds are good that you're going to do fine in a lot of places.
And yet jealous unemployed libtards attack service members with a paying career.
They can't help themselves...it is in their (evil) nature.
We are laughing at you libtards. Maybe mommy will make "meat loaf" tonight after you get home from your shift at KFC.
Good luck with that.
You're cute when you're defensive. But really, your analytic and communication skills aren't a good selling point for a military career. Keep posting this sort of stuff though. It's funny.
