Ultra-long-chain carbohydrates. The theory is that the drink is a lower osmolarity and is therefore absorbed faster. But this ignores the fact that there are enzymes in your stomach that cleave apart these ultra-long carb chains super-fast, which destroys any osmotic benefit.
Not that osmotic benefits are worth much in the first place, given that water in the gut and sodium-rich excretions from the pancreas bring anything you ingest to isotonicity anyways.
UCAN is pretty gross IMO but plenty of other runners yak all the time with regular old Gatorade. Bob Kempainen being a prime example.
