Had a complete muscle failure at around 20 in Boston yesterday. Primary problem was quads(both with same feeling) and had to walk last 6 miles.Finished in terrible 3:48. Tried to ease into slow run but muscles locked up as soon as i would start.
Please help with any advice on how to train/eat to avoid this in future.
Background
1:25 HM 3:03FM in recent past.
Training up to max 90m/week while averaging 60-70 leading up to Boston. Including tempo and speed sessions and hitting paces to indicate sub 3. I including up/down hill training in this.
History
Had right calf lock up(mile 22) on 3:03 FM but was able to work it out and slow run to finish. All other races(HM and shorter) I have had no issues with muscles cramping or post race soreness.
For the race
I carbed up properly and hydrated/ate well on course-Full breakfast(1000cal) 4 hrs before and 4 GU gels with water along course-Urine was decent color after race so not dehydrated. After rain hit at mile 11 I was very cold and started shivering at about 15 when winds chilled my wet clothes-temp was 44* without wind.
Post race-wife siad I was "grey" color, slurring my words and shivering uncontrollably-not sure but this may have been due to slowing to walk for so long w/weather condition.
Possible culprits(but not certain)
ran hard effort HM 3 weeks before and hard effort 5k week before followed by 10 mile LSR.
Sorry for the long post but I was looking for anyone able to offer insight as to this VERY frustrating problem as I dont want to have this issue again. Although I saw people also walking near me, other runners seemed to thrive in these conditions.
Thx
