I jus realized something. How many of those high-viewership channels are actually that way because of malware? All it takes is a worm or something that causes a computer to send an HTTP request to youtube to view your channel's video content.

Youtube (i.e. Google) obviously checks the origin of the request and for suspicious patterns. If you owned hundreds of machines, spread across the country, and had each of them view the video at random, non-rapid intervals for days on end, I bet you could boost the Youtube views without having the view activity flagged out of suspicion.

Yes, but at what cost?
Also, the attacker would need to launch an actual web browser with the flash plugin, and then play the video.. Programatically, that is NOT trivial.

No, Google has a Javascript API that I've used to automatically play videos:
https://developers.google.com/youtube/js_api_reference. So you'll have to be playing the video from a website in which you put it, but that counts towards the number of views nonetheless.
