Where do you think he will finish?
Where do you think he will finish?
I was just going to make this thread, but I was going to go to the effort of tracking down his road marathon PR, which appears to be 2:38, as a frame of reference.
2:54
Probably slower than a lot of people here. Does that make you happy? No, it doesn't, because he's still better known than thousands of people that are faster than him. Get over it, life's too short to be a miserable jealous dbag whole life. I'm sorry some dude stuffed you in a locker in high school and you were lucky that your arms fit through the vents so you could do the combination. Get past it.

He is 41 and effectively retired from being competitive a while ago now. He may have been capable of much faster at some point but he'll probably just cruise this one.

Wow! Impressive aggressiveness! You must have tons of inner daemons waiting to come out. I suggest you try the 800. I'm sure you can get that elusive sub-3 you couldn't get in the marathon.
Relax, Sensitive Ultra Guy.Most letsrunners have never run a marathon (let alone under 3 hours), so your statement is false. They're too busy doing after school workouts before hitting Subway with the homies and then snapchatting d*ck pics to random chicks from their Math 11 class.

Good one!

Does he know where he's going?
I thought the ultra guy's comment was funny, and spot on. The thread was clearly started as an avenue to rip Jurek for being slow. He's also correct about a lot of runners being victims of bullying in high school because they're little guys. The arm through the vent angle was good. It's obviously not going to go over well here, but well done.
Actually i wasnt ripping on anyone, just curious.

no, it was dumb. He came off as the angry loser, not the people possibly poking fun at Jurek.
Why didn't a guy as great as Jurek was at Ultra's try to run a fast marathon in his prime? There's no way you could not say it wouldn't be a good tune-up/speed work for his ultras. And you can't say he might not be curious to how he would do, or even that it would have been a great challenge for him. Most great runners like to tackle a distance that is not their speciality, and the marathon is THE famous distance for a long distance runner (it would be like a 5k guy never trying to run a fast mile, ever).
Only one possible answer: he didn't want to get his ass kicked by dozens and dozens of more talented runners and reveal his short-comings at a much, much, MUCH more competitive distance. Really, that's all there is to it. If the truth hurts, you'll just have to get over it, and off jurek's jock.
A marathon run hard is a good tune-up? Are you for real, dude?
As for why he didn't run one, you'd have to ask him. Only a douche like you would pretend to know... and make up a negative reason to try to bring a guy down. Maybe he simply didn't want to. Maybe it would have been a distraction that detracted from his ultra goals. Who knows. Not you.

You must be new here.
You speak as if you are a dumb dildo. I'm not saying you are a dumb dildo; it's just that if somebody says something like that, the first thought that comes to mind is "that guy's a dumb dildo". As somebody else pointed out, running a hard marathon isn't a "tune-up" for anything. After a hard marathon, you don't just hop back into hard training a day or two later.
When Jurek was winning Western States every year, a hard marathon beforehand would have been one of the most stupid things he could have done.
And i think he was well aware that he wouldn't have been competitive in an elite marathon. Jurek can be kind of douche-y, but I don't think he's ever tried to act like he could have been good at marathons if he'd have tried.
And anyway, he DID try to run a fast marathon, a little after his prime. He ran 2:38. So what? It's not great, and it's not terrible.
