I think it's good for track in the United States that Eugene will host Worlds in 2021.
However the IAAF issued a demonstrably false statement yesterday that a lot of people are picking up on. Thanks to a message board poster for pointing this out. People are writing that Osaka was awarded the 2007 worlds without a bid.
The IAAF's press release said, "There have been precedents in the past, most recently in the awarding of the 2007 IAAF World Championships to Osaka, Japan, which was also done without a bidding process."
That is not true. In 2002 there was a formal bidding process for the 2007 Words. Osaka, Budapest and Berlin all expressed an interest in bidding. Only Osaka submitted a bid and they were awarded the championships. The IAAF press release announcing Osaka is my source for this:

The IAAF either should have 1) Said the truth ie "it is unprecedented to award the Worlds without a bid, but Eugene impressed us so much we did it."
or 2) bid it out
Making up a false statement is not a good solution.
Personally, I think the Worlds should always be bid out. If Gothenburg could submit a better bid than Eugene why not give them the chance? If the bidding process is streamlined, letting more people compete for Worlds only leads to a more optimal outcome for the IAAF. But no matter the process ultimately the Worlds goes wherever the IAAF Council wants it to and the Council made it clear they wanted Eugene.
But I like many like the outcome so the IAAF not bidding it out can be overlooked. What can't be overlooked is the IAAF issuing a false statement.
