If anyone trivializes the role of genetics or calls it an "excuse," you can be certain that you are talking to a total idiot. Thank you for giving me the floor.

If someone WANTED IT BAD ENOUGH and started at a young enough age, they could win a gold medal in T&F in the Olympics. The problem is that the people that say that really want it bad, don't want it bad enough. This is true for anyone.
One's "wanting" something has nothing to do with reality. The physical universe is indifferent to your wants. Either nature endowed you with some form of physical superiority or it didn't. There isn't ONE f*cking neckbeard on this board who wouldn't spend all day training if it would get him success, fame, money, and an out from having to work day job. People who deny the simple fact that genetics rule are rebelling against basic biology and the theory of evolution, which implies that our abilities are determined genetically.

I think the challenge for many people is they say they want it, but they really don't. They want to watch TV at night, stay up late, sleep in an extra hour on Saturday. These people don't really want it, even though they say they do. If you want gold, anyone can get it, assuming they start at a reasonable age (70yo ain't gonna gold!).

Incorrect. Most people can't even be the best in their school by "wanting it badly enough".

People say they want it, but they truly don't.
Man: I wish I could play the trumpet like you do, honey.
Woman: No you don't.
It's all about genetics in running.
So if the guy on here that runs 100 miles a week and does all the little things right can't break 18 minutes or run a 65 second quarter what tips do you have for removing those pesky 5 minutes?

Uh. No.
I busted my ass in high school and my senior year a freshman shows up, jogs through practices and kicks my ass in every race. I "wanted it" and I "worked at it" and it did no good at all.
The equation is : (genetics * 10) + (hard work * smart training) = degree of success

You can try to work on his speed, but you can't coach desire.
Alternatively, ultramarathons will be in the Olympics one day.
I don't think you wanted it bad enough.

You have to want it, not "want it." You wasted your high school "career" doing everything "by the book" instead of boldly going after it.
I'm changing my poorly thought out equation to:
success = (genetics)^(hard work * smart training)
That would read genetics to the power of hard work and training.
Yeah. That's much closer to the truth.

Yeah. That's much closer to the truth.
Your equation implies anyone can do it. Simply keep increasing the hard work until you get the desired success value.
Glad you're starting to understand.

I believe that the role of genetics is exaggerated, and I agree that I am talking to a total idiot.
DiscoGary - You spend an inordinate amount of time on LRC blaming Obama and the liberals for your own shortcomings. It is hard to imagine that you did not find excuses in your running.

Wait a second. I thought this whole thread was satire! Do you people really believe that anyone can become a world class runner if they WANT IT BAD ENOUGH!!!
Do you really believe genetics don't dominate the success equation?
How could that be? Theoretically we all ran in high school. We all saw different people running basically the same practices, working as hard as they could, with wildly different results.
So which event are you guys doing in Rio? I'll be watching.
RIP: D3 All-American Frank Csorba - who ran 13:56 in March - dead
