For the past 8 weeks, I have had some concerning pain around my 4th metatarsal. At first, it was so bad I couldn't run at all, but after about 5 weeks of rest, I was able to start doing very easy runs. It felt fine during these runs, but I would have pain the day AFTER running. Scared of completely re-injuring myself, I have rested the last 3 weeks and yet, the metatarsal still aches occasionally.
Anyway, today I gave in and had MRI. All the doctor said about the results was that "there is inflammation between the third and fourth metatarsals and a bit between the fourth and fifth." He went on to tell me to get custom orthotics and maybe try a cortisone shot.
Has anyone had a problem similar to this? I have been icing religiously so I don't understand how any inflammation hasn't cleared up yet. Does this diagnosis fit the description of a stress reaction? Should I ignore the pain after runs and run anyway? Any information is appreciated - this injury is frustrating! Thank you.
