Jus was wonderin if anyone has much experience w/the yasso 800s.. how accurare are they? This morning I did 12x800 w/ 1-1:15 standing rest... slowest being a 3:02... Not sure I'm currently in 3:02 shape.
Last yr I ran a 3:20 but weather didn't cooperate and I went for sub 3, rookie mistake..would like to think I could st least pull off a bq (3:10) for my age bracket.. I would need to get some more longer runs in to be more confident about this morning's workout.. any help much appreciated..
Few things are more absurd than thinking your pace for 800's are a reasonable predictor of your time in a race that's over 52 times the distance. How about something meaningful, like a half marathon time?

The standing rest is a big no no. A lot of assumptions go into Yasso 800s.
1. You did about 16 weeks of Marathon Specific Training...not just training in general, but an actual organized build up.
2. You did this type of a workout...which is essentially a VO2 max session often.
3. The recovery is ACTIVE. This is a sustained effort...over about 9 miles, if you had a 400m rest between. The rest ensures this stays a VO2 max session and not delving into focusing on the anaerobic system. Running that rest keeps your heart rate elevated and forces you to recover at a higher heart rate.
All that being said, the Yasso 800s, when done with regards to what I just wrote, is telling you that you have done the VO2 work that suggests this system is prepared for a 3:02 marathon. However, you didn't do the workout properly, so it really doesn't suggest anything. A better predictor is a long MP runs...5 easy, 15@MP. 5 steady, 5 MP, 5 steady, 5 MP, 2 at faster than MP. That will tell you if your body can hold up to that pace.

It depends whether you have the right muscle fiber profile really. Lots of runners can run well up to a half marathon, but not so well at the marathon because they have too many fast twitch fibers.

Good example is Mo Farah, who is strong from 1500 to Half Marathon but really sucks in the full 'thon.
Hall is the opposite. Really slow 5k times (almost hobbyjogger territory) but he is arguably the best American Marathoner, by a landslide.
